Thomas J. Watson, who was the President of IBM at the time, noted, “Today is the greatest new product day in the history of IBM and, I believe, in the history of the office equipment industry. These products provide the most significant advancement toward business control and operation by electronics to be made thus far” (IBM Archives). IBM hoped at the time that this ground breaking development would accelerate the use of automation in businesses with a move away from paperwork in the future. Their prediction turned out to be correct.
