The Objective

Client Challenge

Mountain Dew needed an interactive experience that would promote the launch of four new limited-edition flavors in a way that was fun, fast, and shareable. The activation needed to:

  • Capture the high-energy, adventurous tone of the Mountain Dew brand
  • Drive product trial by getting cans directly into fans’ hands
  • Create an element of chance and excitement to keep people engaged
  • Incorporate digital engagement through mobile devices
  • Integrate physical prize fulfillment with a surprise-and-delight element

The goal was to create a vending-based experience that wasn’t just about grabbing a drink — it needed to feel like an event.

Execution

Our Solution

BGWG Monster Media developed a vending machine software experience that blended mobile activation, digital gameplay, and physical product rewards — all designed to reflect the bold, unpredictable energy of Mountain Dew.

1. Mobile Activation via QR Code

Attendees started by scanning a QR code on the vending machine, which launched a mobile-friendly page prompting them to enter their phone number. They then received a unique code via SMS, unlocking their personal vending session.

2. Slot Machine Gameplay

Once activated, users were greeted by an on-screen slot machine — but instead of numbers or cherries, it featured spinning cans of Mountain Dew. With a tap, the reels spun with vibrant animations and sound effects, mimicking the energy of a casino experience with a Mountain Dew twist.

3. Flavor-Based Prize Logic

When the reels stopped, one of the four new Mountain Dew flavors was revealed — and that flavor immediately dispensed from the vending machine for the user to enjoy. Behind the scenes, each flavor was tied to a set of tiered rewards, giving users the chance to win larger, surprise prizes based on which can they received.

 

How We Exceeded Expectations

  • Frictionless Mobile Integration: By using QR codes and SMS codes, the experience felt native to mobile users with no app downloads required — increasing participation and reducing barriers.
  • Brand-Driven Game Design: The slot machine mechanic, custom can animations, and energetic interface all aligned perfectly with Mountain Dew’s adventurous, extreme-sport branding.
  • Surprise & Delight: The layered prize logic created extra excitement — users didn’t just win a can, they might win a bigger prize, too.
  • Efficient Throughput: The experience was designed to handle high foot traffic quickly and efficiently, keeping lines moving and engagement high.
